Choosing Industrial MicroSD Cards for Security Surveillance Systems

Security cameras often operate for long periods without interruption. Whether installed in commercial buildings, factories, transportation systems, or outdoor monitoring locations, these devices may continuously record and overwrite video data. This creates storage requirements that differ from ordinary file storage. For surveillance equipment manufacturers and integrators, choosing a suitable microSD card is an important step in achieving reliable recording performance.

Why Surveillance Storage Is Different

A typical consumer microSD card may be used to store photographs, transfer files, or record occasional videos. A surveillance camera may write data throughout the day. Many devices also use circular recording, where older video files are automatically replaced when storage becomes full. This repeated writing can place considerable demand on flash memory. For this reason, write endurance should be evaluated alongside storage capacity and speed.

Understanding Recording Workloads

The amount of storage required depends on several factors:

  • Video resolution
  • Encoding format
  • Recording bitrate
  • Number of recording hours
  • Motion-triggered versus continuous recording
  • Required video retention period

For example, a camera operating at a constant bitrate of 4 Mbps generates approximately 43.2 GB of video data over 24 hours, before accounting for differences in actual encoding behavior and storage overhead. This illustrates how quickly continuous recording can consume storage capacity and generate repeated write cycles.

Why Endurance Matters

Flash memory has a finite program/erase endurance. In continuous-recording applications, storage media must tolerate repeated writing over the intended operating period. Industrial and high-endurance microSD products may use different NAND configurations, controller strategies, and validation processes to address demanding workloads. However, the term "industrial" should not be treated as a substitute for endurance specifications. Camera manufacturers should request product-level endurance and reliability information.

When comparing suppliers, it is useful to request the following information in writing:

  • Rated program/erase cycles and the test conditions used
  • NAND type and controller architecture
  • Firmware behavior during unexpected power loss
  • Operating and storage temperature ratings
  • Failure rate data and manufacturing qualification reports

Temperature and Environmental Requirements

Surveillance cameras may operate in outdoor enclosures, industrial facilities, or other environments subject to temperature variation. The storage card must remain within its rated operating conditions. It is also important to evaluate temperature inside the camera enclosure rather than relying only on the surrounding air temperature.

Selecting the Right Capacity

Recording bitrate Data per 24 hours 7-day retention 30-day retention
2 Mbps ~21.6 GB ~151 GB ~648 GB
4 Mbps ~43.2 GB ~302 GB ~1,296 GB
6 Mbps ~64.8 GB ~454 GB ~1,944 GB
8 Mbps ~86.4 GB ~605 GB ~2,592 GB

These figures are theoretical and exclude container overhead, file system allocation and reserved space. In practice, engineers usually add a margin of 15–30 percent and confirm the result with a small pilot batch before committing to a card capacity for series production. Where retention periods exceed the capacity of a single card, an edge recording architecture with periodic upload to network storage is often more practical than specifying an oversized card.

Storage capacity should be calculated from recording bitrate and required retention time. A larger card may reduce the frequency of overwriting individual flash locations, but actual endurance still depends on the device's internal design and recording workload. Engineers should validate the complete camera and card combination under realistic operating conditions.
